How come there are no step by step directions to manually creating your own effects. The only thing that is simple is the effects gallery. Everything else has me lost because there are no directions to explain how to perform each function for a first time user to understand. I do not know what to do. I do not understand the lasso, the inverst selection, all of those functions are not being explained.
Re: lost
There are some instructions about creating effects here:
viewtopic.php?f=15&t=240
But in most situations, there will be much simpler ways of doing stuff, so I'd only read it if you really want to get your hands dirty!
The lasso, is a different way of making a selection. You just draw all the way round the object you want to select and it will quickly select it. The edge of the selection appears between the inner and outer lines and you can drag the lines around to fix areas where it has spilled out.
Invert selection changes so everything that was selected is not and everything that was not selected now is selected. Sometimes it's easier to pick the areas you are not interested in changing then hit invert.
For most buttons, if you leave your mouse over them for a few sections, a little description text pops up describing it.

Re: lost
I am still lost, is there another way to help me get the hang of masking, and inverting, and editing my own effects can. I am following the steps and it is still not working for me...can you simplify a little more for me how to do these tasks.

Hi,
Try doing this:
Load in a picture with some sky in it.
Click on Select Area
Click on "The Sky"
Use your mouse to paint pink all over the sky
Press "Confirm Selection And Browse Effects"
Find a sky effect that you like.
Repeat for any other area on your picture.
That pretty much covers masking! All the other bits are for specialised situations.
