I think I went overboard on the effects!

Hi dhenning,

You might try going with one more tool. Try the Area Tool, wait until your paint brush is active, then reduce brush size a little and select or paint the EYES only; they will look a medium-red color, don't get excited----then go over to left panel and mouse the brighten or exposure slider (the red will go away) and slide either slider to the right to brighten just a little; then slide the variation slider and any of the rest to make the EYES look natural and maybe you can really get the pupil color nice and colorful. Play with it "till the EYES are very distinct.

Just a suggestion. Hope it works for you.

PS This is a fine-tune suggestion, but you may also try doing the eyes in 2 parts--the pupils and the whites. That way you can keep the whites white, etc.

Thanks Phelon for the suggestion. Actually, the eyes in the original photo are very dark due to low lighting, so I did lighten them up already. Perhaps the coloring of the area around the iris should be whiter though? Or should I paint in some color for the iris?

You actually did a very good job of constructing your portrait from the original image. The original eyes could be copied, pasted into your new portrait, then reversed horizontally, and perhaps change the brightening, saturation, etc. But the way it is looks good. All in a days creative process. You are the artist, and a good one.
