Just a Dahlia

Postby Mozzy » Mon Nov 04, 2013 6:25 pm

With Winter tottering in the background, this was a we Dahlia flower that was still going just last week. Soooo, initially it was a case of working the RAW image in DPP (Canon's own) followed by some further adjustments in PSE; the latter with histogram results balanced.

Whilst there it was a case of creating a few levels and deal with the 'splatty' background. It is actually a dark fence panel which went darker naturally as I used spot metering. So with everything done n dusted I felt I didn't want masks in PSE on this occasion so at this stage the flower head was pretty basis although colour adjustments contrast gamma, shadows n highlights had been adjusted too. The background I have pulled down to one average level as it was messy with a few differing colours.

With my signature included, I use 'Emjay' as my initials are MJ. Off then to visit SPE. Initially I wanted to make some adjustments utilising the area treatment. After several crashes I kept at until I had got to a point I wanted. I saved and carried on using the gallery section within area treatment. Just some object level treatment with correction, smart sharpen but only very slightly. I should have mentioned from RAW I saved as a TIFF file as it is virtually lossless. I'd advice anyone new to PP to be VERY sparing what you do with a JPEG file.

With my work in SPE completed it was back to PSE to create a border with a graduated effect; flatten the layers and save. I have reduced for SPE. Hope you like it? Sorry for preamble but it may help someone.

Love both versions Mozzy.

Your original diffused version is delightful - adore the background bokeh.

You've done a wonderful job sharpening and drawing out the beautiful colors from the petals. No oversharpening here - just PERFECT!

Like how the stem disappears into the background - your frame is nice and simple & in harmony with the image!

Well done - your second image certainly has that WOW factor now!

Kind regards,

Andrew
