Fun at Avalon, Catalina Island, Calif., USA

Postby Phelon » Thu Jul 03, 2014 6:46 pm

This is my grandson getting ready to go spear-fishing in his uncles's new skiff. They caught two nice-sized fish and their uncle cut them in cubes, marinated the fish cubes for 4 hours in frig in lemon juice, made a delicious salsa, put the two together, and served with tortilla chips. Called Civiche and is Delicious! Girlfriend just graduated from college to be a doctor; grandson headed there, too.

Oh, I forgot. what about the picture? It was a nice day, but I replaced the sky anyway. Didn't have to do much else. Did I forget anything? Should I do anything else?

I posted two sizes to make it easier to see for some.

I can't view this photo (and many others posted in this forum) in its entirety on my tablet because it is too big, so it might be a good idea to post smaller versions for people to comment on. In the end, I waited until I sat down at my desktop PC before taking a close look.

I like this photo very much because it successfully captures the feeling of being at the ocean on a beautiful day having a fun time. It is obviously a snapshot, and not a carefully staged composition such as a professional landscape photographer would take, but it's a great snapshot. The colors are lovely and the building in the background is blurred just enough to give it a little depth of field without losing the detail that you may want to remember. You've brought back the detail in the faces which I assume were lost in shadows out of camera. I wouldn't have noticed that the sky had been replaced - it looks natural.

It makes me want to visit that place!

Hi,

The picture was taken with an Apple iPhone 5s, then downloaded to the latest Apple iPad (the better lens is worth it), then transferred to me on my iMac. Remarkable how sharp the new iPhone pictures are.

I resize my pictures in PS, Save for Web, making the longest side an average of 1350 pixels. I could make them smaller, of course; maybe 1000 to 1200 on the longest side.

PS The iPhones (or similar) are handy for snapshots, such as this one.

It is amazing what stunning photos these phones can make! My own cell phone was a real inexpensive one, and it won't take such good photos. I thought I didn't need a camera on my phone, but now I regret not investing more, because I don't carry a camera with me everywhere and miss a lot of opportunities to take photos. :(
