Northen Latitudes

Postby Richard Briggs » Mon Sep 08, 2014 9:43 pm

My daughter asked me to photograph some ancient school artwork she had before ditching it all. One item was a simulation of white material made of wire and papier mache. I was struggling how to do something neat photographically and doodled around looking through the lens and looking from various angles. It suddenly occurred to me that it also looked like a polar landscape. So I placed it on our table and looked at it from a low angle and that's when I really got creative! The table happened to be glass and the 'ice' reflected in it. I placed some black paper behind (to make masking easier to replace the sky in SPE later) and placed a small model of Cabrillo Point lighthouse (San Diego) on it. And here's the result....

Hi Richard,

Very creative work that your daughter will love to have. I like the simulated Northern scene; I was wondering if you also took pictures of her art directly before being discarded. Presently, the art-work has the look of snow and ice and it made me wonder about seeing her work.

Hi Phelon, I havn't thrown it away yet as I suspect she may change her mind once she sees the photos (she lives in the US, I'm in the UK). Here's two details from larger works that I especially liked both of which I've used SPE to create frames for (otherwise untouched)....

Hi Richard,

These are lovely works of art from your daughter!! I was studying them and saw lots of nice talent. For display, I like number 1; for originality, number 2 (the font, especially); for butterfly drawing, number 3. Yes, I hope Rowena asks you to keep them. They are family treasures.

Best regards,
Phelon

Hi Richard,

The first image looks like it was FUN to make - 'Desktop' photography was one of my passions a number of years ago as you can control lighting to suit your purposes very easily and create 'false' images of scale by creative use of lenses and 'depth of field' techniques. Nice one!

I'm sure your daughter will appreciate your photographs of her artwork for posterity - I like each image for different reasons but am drawn in particular to last butterfly/moth (not sure which) as the varigated texture and colors on the wings are absolutely beautiful. No doubt you will keep copies for your own memory box - or to hang on your wall!

Kind regards,

Andrew
