Brand New Arty Effects

Postby andrewb2012 » Mon Oct 28, 2013 5:19 pm

The latest series of effects that I've created has just come live - there are 90 effects in the series. They have been designed primarily for square images, but will work with all aspect ratios - however, the spiral theme will be distorted and become more oval depending on the actual ratios used.

The effects are meant to be used to create ART images, but you might find them FUN to use for more typical photographs. Below I show an original ARTWORK of mine that was already partially processed in SPE. I then applied 16 of my effects and combined the results in one image for you to see. Note, the 16 effects were applied as uploaded - I deliberately did not use any of the sliders to tweak the effects, but you can make lots of alterations. I did not use masking techniques, but I'm sure that if users applied masks then many more possibilities exist for their use. There are 90 variations - some of these variations are slight, but they give more opportunities to use them creatively. I would encourage you to modify or create your own sets of creative effects and perhaps share them with the SPE community. The last image shows one of my effects applied to a single image so that you can see more clearly the result.

I invite your feedback.

Lovely stuff, here's one I had a go at. I like the small variations because it is the small differences that make it work or not. By the way, this is a colour slide taken circa 1979 of a model I'd made!

First of all, thanks for you kind comments Arwin and for your constant encouragement to me and many other users. As you know my health is not the best, so I have in mind a target of 2000 effect contributions - less than 400 to go. Once I have reached my target I intend to stop making such contributions. The main reason that I have contributed so many is that I believe in the ETHOS of Smart Photo Editor and I wanted through my contributions to encourage others, such as you, to make their own effects and hopefully share some of them with the SPE Community. So let me personally thank you for all your contributions to date - it is great to see each new set of effects that you upload, and I'm sure they will be widely used. What I set out to achieve, is already taking place and I pleased to see a number of new effect contributers as well as artists who use our effects so creatively.

Once SPE was opened up to the community to devise their own effects, it caught my imagination and I started on my mission to encourage others. What a surprise it was to me that the Smart Photo Editor team got in touch with me and asked me if I would meet with them. A consequence of that meeting was that Anthropics contacted me and asked if I was willing to create tutorial videos in the first instance on effect creation and later, at my suggestion, new video tutorials for new users showing how to use the various tools. The task is now complete and I produced about 18 effect creation videos and about 25 new series videos for new users. The only thing I did not do in the effect creation videos was the actual 'voice overs' which were provided by Anthropics who arranged for my scripts to to be narrated. I loved this opportunity to further encourage SPE users develop their skills. I cannot thank the SPE team enough for giving me such an opportunity and a huge amount of support from Tony & Gary who I would like to publicly thank.

Unfortunately changes to my health have meant that I had to review my whole lifestyle & commitments. To this end I had to finish my work on tutorial videos. I miss it quite a bit - and perhaps on occasion I might attempt another one or two and submit them to Tony & Gary for approval, but in the meantime I have to take time out.

I tell you this Arwin, because you have already made some tutorial videos off your own back in support of SPE for which I thank you.

The other thing is that you come behind me with great enthusiasm and have already made a significant contribution to the effects gallery - effects I like to play with. So in a sense my job (in terms of my own mission) has come to an end because the impetus is there to keep building the resource bank. So keep up the good work my friend.

I would like to acknowledge the work of other major effect contributors from whom I've learned so much:

Superdave
Tony
David
Vivienne Li
Andrew
Alexmccall
ArjunAnthroQA
Penningstons7
Tatianat

And all the other contributors, some of whom have remained anonymous - THANK YOU!

So back to my final goal - 2000 effects.

Wishing all users & the whole SPE team all the very best for the future!

Andrew

Richard - great to see your excellent image - I'm glad you found immediate use for the new series - glad to that you like the small variations between the effects.

I think that you realise that you were the inspiration behind the new spiral effects as you had used an effect of mine earlier that had a spiral characteristic. You might be interested to note that whilst this series is based on a centralised spiral motif, it is my intention to create another series in which you can place the spirals where you like, rotate them and resize - these are in the pipeline.

Good luck in your creative artistry!

Cheers,

Andrew

Movable spirals. An excellent addition. In the photo I used I had to crop to make the spinner of the propeller central to the picture (note how I have had to slice the wheels off at the bottom). If I'd been able to move it it would have been even better. Also ability to distort horizontally where the 'subject' (the propeller) is not 90 degrees on. Bit like the Horizontal Distortion control on PS Raw Editor.

Good to read about your overall game plan.

Richard

Here's another. Not so warlike this time. Simply a sunflower using 076 F6. Masked around the edges.

Hi Andrew, I do not know what to say..

There two parts to your story, first love to read and see how your journey in SPE started. Second, sorry to hear that your health will stop you from what you did for the SPE community, I truly wish it has to do something with disinterest..

I've used many of your effects as many others you named to learn how the effects in SPE work, also Tony is very helpful, which I very appreciate!
In the time I started using SPE there where not that much tutorial videos, so what I did, beside the built-in tutorials, was a trial and error process in which I learned a lot. I started using SPE as a regular user, as I saw the great potential in photo editing I wanted to know and understand the software in all it's facets, I don't claim I'll know everything now, I'm still learning or see other ways to accomplish a certain process. I do have a software developer, webdesign background which gave me maybe a few steps ahead in understanding how things work, especially when using the effect editor, which they build very straightforward!

Im happy with the gift of a very creative mindset and love to seek the boundaries of what's possible in SPE. I will surely continue creating effects and help where I can! Why? Just because I like to do :)

I wish you all the best and may your health be rising again!

Looking forward to your upcoming 400 effects!
Thank you Andrew!

Cheers, Arwin
