Second attempt at my first attempt
I've reprocessed my photos from scratch to make them much smaller without losing too much detail.
The navy ships need a bit more shrinkage, some noise reduction, and editing to remove distracting buildings.
At least I now know how to prepare photos for submission.
Click photos to get full(er) width.
Regards,
Angus

Re: Second attempt at my first attempt
I love what you did with the window - it is a lovely image and gives me a melancholy feeling wondering what history went on behind it.
The naval ships are very majestic, and I like the composition. The foliage in the background looks speckled, as if it had a lot of color noise in it. Is that an intended effect?

Thanks for your comments Eadams,
There is a long and mixed history relating to the old Dowager's house near Castle Toward in Argyll.
It has (nearly) ended with the gradual erosion of the building after it was abandoned in the 1960's.
The original photo is very detailed but a bit depressing.
The ships were photographed using a 300mm telephoto lens (handheld) from 3 miles away on a grey and misty day (quite common here).
The photo will get some noise reduction and some touch-ups before printing.
SPE seems to have a lot of potential is making many of my second rate photos into acceptable images with minimum effort.
I hope to show more once I get the sizing right.

Angus

Re: Second attempt at my first attempt
Hi,
Certainly when I have a photo that really has nothing to commend it I often find SPE can transform it to something special. I submitted a lacklustre photo taken in Bruges a few months ago together with the SPE version and the difference was staggering. It says something to me about the role of post production in photography and whether it is 'photography' or not (the usual religious debate). I for one see SPE as two things:
1 - A tool for enhancing photos in much the same way as Photoshop etc and just teasing out the best of what is already an excellent photo. This can make use of some of the more subtle effects.
2 - A tool for taking a photo and creating something quite artistic with it where anything goes.

Re: Second attempt at my first attempt
Hi Richard,
In my view post production is a very necessary part of photography. Even though my camera produces good technical JPEGs they always need a little sharpening or cropping or other treatments. Before SPE I always found that the sky in my land and seascapes benefited from some enhancement.
The best hung photos are those with bold colour and contrast.
I've also done a lot of work for friends and family to help them produce prints that they were proud to frame and hang.
Some of the best were taken on cheap and low resolution digital cameras!
In short, it's results that matter. SPE allows me to get results quickly and easily.
Needless to say I use Portrait Professional for my people photos, a subtle touch is required here!

Re: Second attempt at my first attempt
Hi Seahawk,
Thanks for your comments. I'm pleased with the photo of the window. I have other "still life" shots which have benefited from use of SPE - I seem to often use "Tiffany" effect for these. I used "Dragan Noise Control" for distant misty shots of ships and boats. These were previously difficult to make good enough to print.
I look forward to seeing your photos when you get round to posting them.

Angus
