GRADIENT
With this node you can create your own gradients. There are three different Types of gradient -- Linear, Radial and Conical -- and three different Spread types: Pad, Mirror and Repeat. The Radius slider will change the size of the radial gradient. The Alpha feature allows you to use transparency on specific colours of your gradients while the Opacity slider will change the opacity of the entire gradient.
The Area option restricts the gradient to within a selection that you have made.
A common use of a gradient is as a second input to the Merge Node. This allows you to combine gradients with pictures using any of the blending modes that the Merge Node supports as shown here:
