Cut out for transparent background

I want to cut around an object so that I can place it in a composite photo. Then save it.
Can I then flip it and or edit that part?
Eg: I want to put a hat onto someone.
Can anyone help, it's driving me batty.

SPE has a composite tool that allows you to cut out and place objects on a new background. You can watch video tutorials here. You can move scale and rotate the image but not mirror it.
