Somethings wrong with my SFE

For some reason when I open a image in SFE I cannot selet any of the "Effects" or make a "Composite"....The one thing I have noticed is that
the Cursor has a + symbol inside a magnifying glass...This has never happened before, please help

Hi,
When you say you can't select any effects or make a composite, what happens when you do press "OK" on an effect or press the composite button?
