Thank you, Tony.
I will explore 'montage' further, but what I had in mind was a minimal number of images imposed upon each other - as in old-style film double-exposure - with various levels of translucency/transparency allowed between them.
This I guess is 'layers'.
I have an aversion to Adobe and Photoshop and was hoping that I could achieve the desired effect more intuitively with SPE.
Is there a way of doing that?

Forgive me if I'm overlooking something blindingly obvious.
By the way, I love the guitar backing behind the first montage tutorial you suggested.
But that's another story. :)

Michael.

Yes, I think the effect you're looking for is similar, but with the further steps of changing the opacity and/or blending mode of pictures you've placed on top of each other. N.B. You don't have to start with a montage, you can just composite images starting with a single image, rather than a textured canvas.
