Feature requests

Postby eadams » Sun Jul 06, 2014 1:54 pm

I love this software and keep discovering new great things about it. I hope the development team will continue to work on the software - I would certainly purchase an update.

The feature requests that I have so far (some have been mentioned in other threads but I wanted to record them in one place in the Feature Requests forum) are as follows. (Some of these features may already be available but haven't yet been discovered by me :) )

1. Improved search functionality. I would like to find effects by entering only part of their name. It is very hard to remember the names of effects. For example, if I enter the word "dimension" I would like the search results to include all the "New dimensions" effects by andrewb2012. Currently, I have to enter either the entire name or enter a keyword that the effect has been tagged with.

2. I would like to be able to view the tags and descriptions already attached to an effect. Maybe this is already possible, but I haven't discovered it yet. I don't even know where to look to find the keywords and descriptions I entered for my own local effects. If this is already possible, it should be more intuitive to access.

3. When I have applied an effect, I always want to see the name and author of the effect. In my "Favorites" and "Shortlist" lists I only see the name, but not the author, and if I apply one of the effects from there, the effect gets applied, and I see the name of the effect, but I still don't see who the author was.

4. When I manually edit an existing effect, I would like to still see the name and author of the original effect I was editing. This isn't a must-have feature, but it would be nice. Scenario: I find an effect that I like by an author named userxyz in the effects gallery. I experiment with the effect with the Effect Editor, replacing or tweaking one or more of the nodes. I decide I want to publish the altered effect locally for my own personal use, but I would like to credit the original author when I do that (e.g. by naming the altered effect "Contrast effect by userxyz edited by me" or something similar). By the time I am ready to do that, I have forgotten the name and author of the effect I am working on because in the top panel where I see my applied effects it only says "Custom effect".

5. I would like the "momentary shortlist" to persist in memory for the length of an entire sitting and to be saved with the .pe file if I save a session. Explanation: When hovering over an effect in the Effects Gallery, an Effect Controls dialog box appears where I have the option to "Add to Shortlist". I was originally confused by this option because I thought it meant the Shortlist on the upper right of the screen ("Favorites Recent Shortlists"). Now I perceive it to be an option to remember the effect just for the moment while trying to decide which effect to apply to my currently loaded image. This is a good feature to have, but I would like this momentary shortlist to remain available for the entire sitting. Instead, as soon as I do apply one of the effects from this shortlist, the shortlist is deleted (reset to zero effects in the shortlist). This is unfortunate, because while browsing through the Effects Gallery I often find several effects that I would like to apply sequentially to my loaded image. As soon as I apply the first effect, the list is wiped clean and I have to start browsing again. Alternatively, I have to write the names of the effects I want on paper (and I have to write the name exactly as it appears, otherwise I won't find the effect again).

6. More detailed help for Nodes in Effect Editor. When I open a node in the Effect Editor and click on "help", I am taken to a forum post describing how to use the node. It would be nice to have more elaborate explanations for some of the nodes with examples.

7. Nodes for creating textures (e.g. by using noise) in the Effect Editor. This may be too drastic a change in the philosophy of SPE to be considered. Currently, SPE relies heavily on blending external texture images with the loaded image to create a textured result and maybe that is just the way it is supposed to be. It would be nice to have a simple noise creation node though (maybe there is one and I haven't found it).

I will add other suggestions to this thread when they come to mind. Thanks for this great program!

8. I would like to be able to use the mouse wheel to scroll through the Effect Gallery. I have learned that it is possible to scroll using the Page up and Page down keys, but mouse wheel scrolling would still be preferable. :)

Lots of good ideas there. Could anyone else comment on if any of these suggestions would appeal to them?

A couple of things that might be useful to you right now:

When you apply an effect, all of the effects in your shortlist get copied into the "Favorites Recent Shortlist" button, which persists not just across a single .pe file but across anything you load.

As far as adding more node help goes, that's a good idea, but our trouble is we never know what is confusing (it makes sense to use because we wrote it!) So the most useful help to you might be if you asked specific questions in the node help.

Comment on my feature request #1 in my previous post. You REALLY need to improve the search capability. If I could only wish for one thing, this would be it.

Most recent example of frustration: I know there are effects that add silhouette shapes (trees, people) to an image because I have come across them while browsing through the Effect Gallery. Now that I would like to use one of these effects, I can't find them. I don't know the EXACT name of one of the effects, so I get no meaningful search results when I use the search functionality. I thought of selecting one of the Effect Categories on the left to filter the effects, but none of the categories seem to fit what I'm looking for. Arrrgggghhh!

Hi eadams

Good points. In the meantime have you tried looking in your recent list?

Hi Tony, yes of course, but thanks for the suggestion. If I know I have applied the effect before I immediately look in the "Favorites Recent Shortlist" list. Since that list only contains 20 entries, I am often unlucky and the effect is no longer listed. But in many cases I am trying to find an effect that I have seen while browsing, but never applied to an image, so it never made it to the Recent list to begin with.

you can find tree ones by typing in "tree silhouette" and also "tree silhouettes series one"

You can also see a list of all the creations here: http://photoeditor.anthropics.com/effects/

I'm trying to figure out a way to completely alphabetize the whole list so it would be easier to find something. If anyone knows how that can be done, please let me know.

@DBenterprises: Thank you for posting the link to the list of effects! How did you know about it?

I can alphabetize the list and will post it when it is finished. The online list unfortunately requires a click on each effect name to discover the effect author's name. It would be possible to extract this information into the list with a simple batch program, but I am not a programmer, so I would have to pass there. In the meantime, andrewb2012 has posted a list of his effects, and it should be possible to merge his list with the online one so that at least his effects are credited to him in the list. I will look into doing this today.

Of course, the SPE team could provide such a complete online list in an instant that automatically updates daily. Maybe they will do so :)
