Any time the program seems to be locked in something or User wants to abandon current action. Hotkeys for emergency perhaps the following:

Press escape to return to previous step in effect chain. Soft bailout.
Press escape plus control to revert to original image. Hard bailout.

Good points. Did you know you can cancel the current thing you are doing by moving the mouse over the tab and pressing the x button.
