Hi BBQMan,
I think what you've done is created an underlay when you should have made an overlay. An underlay is a picture behind your original, so you paint the alpha channel on your original picture in places where you want the background to show through. An overlay puts something on top, so when you paint the alpha channel it's on the second picture and so it moves around with it.
