The Select Area Panel
The select Area Panel lets you select an area in order to browse effects on that area. The gallery will show effects that are specific to the area you select. So if you select a sky region for example, it will show effects that make skies look better. To select an area, use the brushes, described here. The area you select will be shown as a red wash by default, although you can change how it is shown using the visualization buttons.
To re-use a selection you've made previously, you can hover over the Effects Gallery button, and all the selections you've previously made will show up as buttons in the description panel that pops up when you hover. You need to have the "Descriptions for tools on right" turned on in the settings dialog (File >Settings).
