Lighten Part of a photograph

I keep loosing my posts. I have posted this question twice and cannot find a reply.
I want to lighten only a part of a pic being bottom left where some rocks and moss are.
I have used the select tool and covered over it but nothing shows that I want to use to improve just this part of the photo/
