A jpeg file is smaller because it contains less 'information'. This can be for many different reasons. If you blur the background of a picture, you loose information, but that loss is intentional and done for artistic reasons. Many other changes to photos can loose information. You can also choose to loose information to make the file size smaller. In the latest version (1.5.4) you get to choose how much to compress your jpegs and trade off file size against artifacts. If you are at all concerned, save as tiff because they never loose any information.

1.5.4 is only available on PC for now. You can download it from here. It will be available as an in app update and on the Mac soon.
